During an 1878 county fair, F.W. Woolworth tested the idea of selling a fixed-price line of merchandise in a department store. The result of his experiment was the Woolworth store chain. Later, the Woolworth Department Stores were found in almost ever city in the United States, and became a household name. Watertown also is noted as the home of Fort Drum.
