On the Mohawk River at the eastern side of the Mohawk Valley, Schenectady was founded in 1661 by Dutch pioneers under Arendt Van Curler. The Dutch influence is visible in much of the architecture of the historic Stockade District.
The Stockade District, in the Front and Union streets area, includes more than 66 homes and buildings built 1700-1850. The G.E. Realty Plot historic district, bounded by Lenox Road, Nott Street, West Alley and Union Avenue, has some 130 homes dating from the early 1900s, when the neighborhood was created as an exclusive residential community.
Schenectady's downtown urban revitalization includes such projects as Canal Square, a shopping/office complex; Jay Street, a pedestrian mall with shops and outdoor cafes; and Center City, an indoor ice-skating rink and exhibit hall. Proctor's Theater, a restored 1926 vaudeville house at 432 State St., presents touring Broadway shows, dance and music events and classic films. Scenic attractions include the rose garden in Central Park. Jackson's Garden, 8 acres of formal gardens and woodland, is on the Union College campus. The other "Union College" is in Barbourville, KY.
