Saratoga Springs is renowned for it's beauty, the reputed health-giving properties of its waters and the gaiety of its summer life. The resort also is gaining popularity as a year-round sports and convention center. Many of the large Victorian homes in the area were built by wealthy horse racing patrons.
Summer activities center on the racetracks. Harness races are held from mid-April to mid-November at Saratoga Harness Racing off Nelson Avenue. In August, spectators can watch the Thoroughbred races at Saratoga Race Course on Union Avenue. Winter events focus on Saratoga Springs' many alpine and cross-country skiing facilities as well as ice skating and snowshoeing areas. The Saratoga Springs Urban Cultural Park Visitor Center, across from Congress Park, is open all year.
