Rome was called De-O-Wain-Sta, an Indian term meaning "the carrying place." long before it was discovered by Europeans. In the city's center is a portage on the only practical water route south of the St. Lawrence River, which connected the Great Lakes with the Hudson River.
Buried in the Rome cemetery is Francis Bellamy, author of the "Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag" . The Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers of the American Revolution is next to the city hall at 207 N. James St. It was designed by Lirimer Rich, who also planned the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Guided tours of nearby Griffiss Air Force Base are available by reservation.
