Originally settled by the Dutch, Poughkeepsie became the state capital in 1777. Eleven years later, the state ratified the U.S. Constitution. The city is built on the rocky terraces rising 250 feet above the Hudson River and the level plateau above. Poughkeepsie is the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and the Vanderbilt Mansion national historic sites are nearby.
