Situated on Lake Champlain, Plattsburgh was the site of the Battle of Plattsburgh on Sept. 11, 1814. While Gen. Alexander Macomb restrained a superior British land force, the Americans, under Cmdr. Thomas Macdonough, scored a decisive naval victory in Plattsburgh Bay.
