Newburgh was the site of George Washington's headquarters for more than a year during the Revolutionary War, and later was known for its thriving whaling industry. With the demise of whaling, the town successfully turned its ships to other trade in the late 1800s with its seafaring tradition still evident.

Downtown Newburgh is the site of several historic buildings dating from the late 18th through 19th centuries, and is home to a 455-acre historic district.
