Nine years after the decisive battle of Newton in 1779, the first permanent settlers built their cabins on the site that is now Elmira. The name of the city was derived in 1808, according to local folk lore, from the name of a neighborhood child who wandered into a meeting where local politicians were trying to decide on a name for the town.
Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, married Elmira native Olivia Langdon in 1870; thereafter the Clemens family spent its summers at Olivia's sister's farm. It was in Elmira that Twain wrote "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and other classic works, that are so famous.
Woodlawn National Cemetery contains more than 3,000 graves of Confederate soldiers who died in the local prisoner of war camp. Year-round entertainment is available at the Clemens Performing Arts Center at Clemens Center Parkway and Gray Street. From July through Labor Day.
