German, Dutch, English, and Scotch-Irish, immigrants who migrated from the coast to the mountains in search of better hunting and farming settled in Waynesville in the 18th century. Originally called Mount Prospect, Waynesville was renamed after Revolutionary War general "Mad" Anthony Wayne. The World Methodist Council is headquartered just 3 miles from Waynesville at Lake Junaluska.
In late July or early August, Waynesville features mountain music, clogging and games at the Smoky Mountain Folk Festival. This event also features Southern Appalachian crafts, antiques and a quilt show.
