German and Swiss colonists settled New Bern in 1710, naming it after Bern, Switzerland. By 1749 the brustling river port had the colony's first printing press; two years later printer James Davis founded the state's first newspaper, the North Carolina Gazette. As Colonial capital 1766-76 and state capital 1776-94, New Bern played an active part in the Revolution.
New Bern's streets are lined with historic sites and outstanding examples of American architecture, especially the early 19th-century Federal style.
