Kinston was founded in 1762 and was originally named Kingston. After the Revolution, the Patriots changed the spelling to avoid any reference to England. Today Kinston is among the nation's leading bright-leaf tobacco markets. East of town on US 70, Lakeside Mills operates a 19th-century gristmill.
Founded in Kinston in 1981, the Eastern North Carolina Bluegrass Association is dedicated to promoting public awareness of bluegrass and its heritage. On the second Saturday of each month the association performs at 6 p.m. in the Lenoir Community College gymnasium on SR 70.
