Kannapolis (pronounced ka-NA-po-lis) was founded in 1887 as a company town around the famous Cannon Mills textile headquarters and mills. Before the turn of the 20th century and the marketing of ready-made clothes, Cannon cloth was a staple in Southern homes. The city is still home to Fieldcrest Cannon Inc., one of the world's largest producers of household textiles.

Kannapolis' central business district features Cannon Village, whose renovated and recently constructed buildings depict the architectural style of the early 20th century. West Avenue offers bargain hunters a wide variety of factory discount outlet stores representing major manufacturers.
