Elizabeth City is at the Narrows of the Pasquotank River, approximately 12 nautical miles from the Albemarle Sound. The Dismal Swamp Canal connects the Elizabeth River in Virginia and the Pasquotank River. After the canal was dug in 1790, Elizabeth City's development really began.
By the early 1800s a vigorous trade with the West Indies was established, and the freshwater, landlocked harbor on the Pasquotank River became busy, as it is today. Nearby are the large U.S. Coast Guard Air Station and the Elizabeth City Shipyard.
Reminders of early days are the old Christ Episcopal Church, the Old Brick House and Hall Creek Church.
The Riverspree Festival, a celebration of life along the river, takes place on the waterfront Memorial Day weekend. Musical entertainment, water races, food and local arts and crafts booths are featured. The Albemarle Craftsmen's Fair in mid-October and the Mistletoe Craft Show in mid-November also attracts artists from many states.
