Near the southern entrance of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway, the 56,000-acre Qualla Boundary Cherokee Indian Reservation is occupied by 10,000 members of the Eastern Band of Cherokees, who have made this area of the Smokies their home for centuries.

Cherokee history and culture are presented at several museums, an outdoor drama and the Qualla Arts and Crafts Shop. The Cherokee Visitor Center on Main Street offers information on area events and attractions. It is open daily 8 a.m.-9 p.m., June-Aug.; 8-5, rest of year. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Dec. 25.
