The community of Chapel Hill is centered around the campus of the University of North Carolina, which was chartered in 1789. Although not the first state university chartered, the University of North Carolina was the first in the nation to accept and graduate students. The school, which opened its doors in Chapel Hill on Jan. 15, 1795, is noted for its professional schools, liberal arts and sports programs.
Parking on the campus is very limited. Visitor parking is available in a number of municipal lots along Franklin and Rosemary streets.
The Research Triangle Park, a center for industrial and governmental research, is 12 miles east of Chapel Hill via SR 54 and I-40.
