Monroe: One of the oldest communities in the state, Monroe was founded in 1780 by the French at the site of an Indian village where the River Raisin enters Lake Erie. The settlement, originally called Frenchtown, was the scene of the River Raisin Massacre in 1813 during the War of 1812. Gen. George Custer lived in Monroe for many years before his Army service. A 1920 bronze statue of Custer entitled "Sighting the Enemy" is downtown on the southwest corner of N. Monroe Street and W. Elm Avenue. Shipping and industry support the city. The Vietnam War Memorial is off I-75 exit 15, then one-fourth mile west on SR 50 in Heck Park. The memorial is similar to the one in Washington, D.C., and lists the names of Monroe County soldiers. A self-guiding tour of the historical Navarre-Anderson Trading Post Complex, 3775 N. Custer, is offered weekends Memorial Day through Labor Day.
