Marquette: First settled in 1849 as a shipping center, Marquette was named for the French missionary and explorer Father Jacques Marquette. Surrounded by the rugged Laurentian Uplands on the southern shore of Lake Superior, the city is the medical, shopping and political center of the Upper Peninsula. The unique wooden dome at Northern Michigan University's Great Lakes Sports Training Center is purportedly the world's largest; the site offers football, soccer and an Olympic training facility. The International Food Fest, held in July, features live music, folk dancing and ethnic food prepared by restaurants around Marquette. The Hiawatha Traditional Music Fest, held mid-July, is an outdoor festival featuring live bluegrass, folk and traditional music. Marquette is the western terminus of an especially beautiful 40+ mile drive that is US 41 for a few miles south, then SR 28 along the lakeshore to Munising.
