Kalamazoo: Springs bubbling up in the riverbed are said to have been the inspiration for Kalamazoo's catchy name, an Indian word meaning "place where the water boils." Whatever its origin, Kalamazoo has enlivened many a poem and song, and has made this city well-known.
Produce from the nearby vegitable farming region and the diverse products of many industries provide the basis of Kalamazoo's economy. Western Michigan University and other schools contribute to the city's cultural life. The Kalamazoo Kitefest is held in River Oaks Park in April. Bronson Park is one of the sites of the Kalamazoo County Flowerfest in mid-July, the Michigan Wine and Harvest Festival the week after Labor Day and the New Year's Fest on Dec. 31.
