Home of the widely popular cereal from Kellogs, the corn flake was invented here by two brothers. Now the Ralston Purina Co, afiliate Post Cereals Division of General Foods Corp headquarters. The civil war has played a role in making health an issue here, with attitudes and ideals to developement vitiman enriched foods.
In 1894 two brothers named Kellogg, experimenting in the kitchens of the nutrition-minded Battle Creek Sanitarium, developed a flaked cereal. From this modest beginning grew the giants that have made Battle Creek the breakfast food center of the nation: the Kellogg Co., the Post Division of Kraft-General Foods Corp. and the Ralston Purina Co. Battle Creek's progressive attitudes are manifested in issues other than health. In the decades before the Civil War, the city was an abolitionist stronghold and an overt station on the Underground Railroad. Bailey Park and C.O. Brown Stadium, between Capital Avenue and the Battle Creek River, are the scenes of national amateur baseball tournaments and the home of the "Michigan Battle Cats." South of town on Goguac Lake, Willard Park offers water recreation and picnicing. The Vintage Home Tour, held the first full weekend in May, includes admission to several of the town's historic homes. The World's Longest Breakfast Table is held in June. The week-long Battle Creek International Balloon Championship and Air Show in July is a favorite of many. Hot air balloons, air shows, entertainment and arts and crafts are highlights of the festivities. During the International Festival of Lights, held late November through December 31, Battle Creek celebrates the season with lighting displays throughout the city. Entertainment, music events and parades are part of the festivities. Host to a underground railroad support stronghold, the Sojourner Truth has always had an impact here. The city now finds industrial and commercial activities more focused on economy than society, with a splash of culture embellishment.
