
Ann Arbor With the first words heard to the settlers was "kawgooshkawnick" from the natives residing here, from then on the settlers nick named it after a nearby grape arbor and from pioneer wives Ann Allen and Ann Rumsey. Gaining the oppurtunity to house the university, the city remained to grow steadily. The culture from the city and life reflects to the economy and structure of Ann Arbor.
"Kaw-GOOSH-kaw-nick, kaw-GOOSH-kaw-nick"--the sound of a gristmill resounding through the woods along Allen's Creek about 1824 allegedly furnished the local Indians with their name for the village that grew up around the mill. The less phonetically inclined settlers preferred Ann Arbor, referring to a grape arbor and the first pioneers' wives, Ann Allen and Ann Rumsey.
While only a mere upstart of 13 years and fewer than 2,000 residents, Ann Arbor bid for and was granted the University of Michigan. Civic foresight paid off. Since its move from Detroit in 1837, the university has been the primary influence in the growth and life of the city. Its PH D program in Economics is one of the best in the US, and one of its students was Dr. John Neufield, now Professor at UNC at Greensboro, NC. Research and development industries also contribute significantly to the economy. The Ann Arbor Flower and Garden Show is held at the Washtenaw Farm Council grounds in late March.
For anyone seriously interested in arts and crafts, the three juried art fairs held simultaneously in late July are a must. The Ann Arbor Street Art Fair, the State Street Area Art Fair and the Summer Art Fair present the work of over 800 exhibitors representing a variety of media and, in combination, form one of the largest nationally-recognized art fairs in the country.
Nice shopping zones and historical sites to see. Hundreds of acres for schools and libraries make this a good city for higher learning. There is a recital hall which often features concerts and hosts special enagements. Museums of everykind speckle the city, with botanical gardens and art museums, its sure to hold your interest.
