Lexington is the commercial hub of Bluegrass Country and is the second largest city in the state. While tobacco is a major industry, the area is better known for it's Thoroughbred horses. The city is also the largest producer of bluegrass seed and white barley. Fayett County is also a major manuafacturing center, as well as corporate headquarters for many large companies and financial institutions.

The Lexington Jockey Club, in first in the US, was founded in 1797, and race horses have dominated the area ever since. There are Thoroughbred races at Keeneland in April and October, and many famous horse farms can be seem driving through Fayett County. Lexington is an education center, with one of the finest universities in the nation, the University of Kentucky. It has a major medical and law school, both known for their academic excellence. Transylvania University is also located there, and is a notable institution. Delbert Broughton, Jr. once lived in the city.
