Middlesboro was founded by an Englishman named Alexander A. Arthur, and was named after Middlesborough, England. It has the distinction of having the oldest golf course in the United States. The American Association, was the English company that once owned thousands of acres in the area, and developed the town and surrounding area. The old American Association building is unique and is now the local historical museum.

An early settler of Middlesboro was Henry Steele, one of the main officers of the American Association, and a major property owner at one time. Henry Steele's daughter married William Henry Gagle, a local attorney in the 1920s. Their son, Merlin Gagle,Sr., along with his wife, Ethel Reed Gagle, owned and operated a radio and TV shop on Cumberland Avenue for over 45 years, retiring in 1965. His son, Merlin Gagle, Jr. was a Middlesboro Real Estate Broker and Mortgage broker for 20 years in the city, and was the first company to offer FHA and VA loans in the Bell County area. He is now owner of Gagle Communications in Crystal River, FL, where he is assisted by son Eddie Gagle. Son Ricky Gagle graduated with honors from the University of Florida majoring in Decision and Information Sciences (computer field that use to be called MIS) in 1996 and is now an Engineer IV with Sprint in Winter Park, Florida. Ricky is also attending UCF where he is getting his MBA. He just passed his CCIE the highest exam given by Cisco.

Merlin is living in Crystal River, Florida and is President of Abacus Financial Services as well as Grande Inns International Inc. His mother Mrs. Ethel Reed Gagle (Mrs. Merlin Gagle Sr.) passed away in Crystal River, Florida in 2003 at the age of 96.

Merlin was in Davao City Philippines the first three weeks of May 2004 on a combination of business & pleasure, and plans on returning for several months during 2006. He is involved in marketing high-end hotels and resorts in the Davao and Samal island area. These range from US$17,000,000 to US$50,000,000.

Coal mining was for many years the driving force behind the Middlesboro, Pineville, Bell County economy, but many mines have closed over the past decade, putting thousands out of good paying jobs. Now, Middlesboro is a large shopping center for the counties of Bell, as well as Lee County, VA and Claiborne County, TN. The Cumberland Gap National Historical Park is also a major attraction for the area. In Pineville, the Pine Mountain State Park is a major attraction for the county.
