Peoria is named after one of the five Illinois Indian tribes, and is said to be the oldest settlement in the state. The first Europeans to visit the region were Joliet and Marquette, around 1673.
The Perioa Mineral Springs was responsible for the creation of several breweries. Peroia mineral water is still being marketed. This corn-belt city is an important railroad, shipping, and manufacturing center. Peoria is home to Bradley University, which is comprised of six colleges.
Tower Park in Perioa Heights, is a water tower with a glass enclosed elevator that allows visitors to get a wonderful view of od downtown Perioa and the Illinois River. There are many parks, a restored riverfront area, a zoo, and museums in the area.
