Alton Above the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, this town was formed back in 1817 when three towns became one. Once a Eagle Packet boat producer, the towns waterways became busier than ever. By the Alton Lock and Dam there are calmer waters and oppurtunities for a pleasent day of boating. With a park nearby the waterways you can see how the system operates by taking the official tour.
The anti-slavery press of Elijah Lovejoy was under attack here back when slavery existed and Lovejoy gave his life defending it. (1837) More than twenty years later, the Underground Railroad was underway and moving slaves through Alton.
