Although many miles from the gold and silver mines discovered in the region during the mid-1980s, it was these riches that lead to it's formation. This city of 45,000 (1996) was originally called Taylor's Crossing, and was established in 1860 along one of the few fording points of the upper Snake River. Many miners enroute to Montana from Salt Lake City road J.M. Taylor's ferry.

When minning gave out in the region, at the turn of the century the residents of Idaho Falls doug channels to irrigate the arid land and soon the town flourished with agriculture. The city was founded in 1900, and named for the nearby water falls. The irrigation system now provides water to more than a million acres of farmland. Crops include russet potatoes, grain, sugar beets, and many fruits.

Idaho Falls is the home of the Wilkersons- Shawn, Allison, Chelsea, Cindy and Andrea. They enjoy a different kind of "West" in the summers... the mountains of Western North Carolina in the Highlands area. In the Fall of 1996, Shawn will be a Freshman in college in NM.
