Boise, "The City of Trees", is Idaho's capital and largest city. The forest along the Boise River were a welcome sight to the French-Canadian trappers coming out of the semi-arid plain, whereby Boise got it's name meaning "wooded". The city was officially founded in 1863, a year after the gold rush had reached the Boise Basin.
The new capital was the center of commerce and culture for the traders and miners from closeby mountain "boom" towns. Liberal taxe advantages, low ocst-of-living, and quality of life have meant steady economic growth. It is also a transportation hub, and is the home of Boise State University. The Owyhee Mountains protect Boise from the harsh winter weather, which allows for year-round enjoyment of leisure and recreation.
