(Interesting facts about the Panama City & Beach Area)
Spanish expeditions visited this area in the period 1516-1540, but it was not until 1765 that the English established a settlement at St. Andrew, now part of Panama City. Panama City is a leading port on the St. Andrew Bay off the Gulf of Mexico.
Once a little fishing village, Panama City, with a 1996 population of around 35,000, is now a resort town with industry. It is a popular Spring Break spot for college students.
Panama City Beach has white, powdery sand beaches. The Yucatan Current of the Gulf Stream runs close to its shores, bringing with it the nutrient rich Caribbean water, and along with this the sailfish, blue marlin, bull dolphin fish, wahoo, and tuna.
This area is well known for its fishing, seafood, resorts, and attractions for children and the family. BUT..extreme caution is urged while swimming in the Gulf waters off Panama City Beach due to strong ocean currents, and the limited lifeguard protection there.
