The area was sparsley settled until local resident, Julia Tuttle, lobbied to have rail service extended to South Florida. She convienced Henry Flagler to extend his rail service to Miami, and he decided to build a town as well.In the early 1900s, John Collins promoted the Miami Beach area as a residential area. By the 1920s, the land boom was wide open.
Soon this area was home to mammonth hotels, which brought on the tremendious tourist explosion that still exists today. Since 1974, when Gagle Communications Chairman Merlin Gagle lived there, the area has under gone a big change in culture, due to the immigration of thousands of Cubans and other peoples from South America.
