The land was ceded to Congress in 1788 by Maryland. The seat of government was transferred to D.C. December 1, 1800. The municipal corporation was formed February 21, 1871. The District was named in honor of Columbus.

The District of Columbus is also the City of Washington, D.C. and is the capital of the United States. It is also the first carefully planned and detailed capital in the world.The original capital site is a section of land 10 miles square, along the Potomic River. It ended up being 68.25 square miles, all of land ceded by Marlyland.

The City of Washington, D.C. has it's own seperate city government, funded both through city taxes and federal funds.
