Los Angeles began as the little town of "Our Lady the Queen of the Angeles of Porciuncula". After the Mexican War, the US acquired California, and LA became a fast growing frontier town. Gold was doscovered in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains and the "gold rush" was on. In the 1850s and 1860s the area was so taken by lawlessness, that LA was called Los Diablos "The Devils", by many people. It seems that in the 20th century, this same term has come to haunt the area several times.
By 1890 the population exceeded 50,000 and in the period between 1890 and 1940 LA grew to over 1,500,000 people... an increase of 2,500 percent ! The city occupies an area of 464 square miles, with many smaller communities hemmed in by the LA population explosion. Today, Los Angeles is a major oil refining centers, as well as the nation's largest retailing and manufacturing centers. It is headquarters for several major banks and insurance companies, and other Fortune 500 companies. Aerospace equipment is a major employer in LA, although this has slowed in recent times.
An, of course, Los Angeles is the film making capital of the entire world. with major film and tv studios in the immediate area. This helps to ppromate LA as a major tourist area, and has many convention facilities as well as exhibition facilities. You name it, and it can be found in LA, from sports to excellent restaurants. Hollywood is one of the LA "communities".
