Huntsville has the distinction of being the site of the first English settlement in the State of Alabama. The city is best known as the birthplace of the nation's space program. Being the site of the NASA George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, which was established in 1960, has put Huntsville in the forefront of the US space program. At the top of the list of projects the Center has been involved in, is the Saturn V moon rocket, the satellite-launching rockets, and the development of the space shuttle's propulsion system.

Huntsville's location just north of the Tennessee River with it's many lakes, make this a popular area for fishing, water skiing, camping, and other recreation. The area hosts many museums, including the well known U.S. Space and Rocket Center.
